00021: The UPS Box

Day 10 of the 30-Day Minimalism Game

Day 10, ten items

Let’s start with the obvious. The big black binder or folder or whatever you want to call it is not part of the 10 items. I simply used to keep the box in place. Got that? Good.

So, the more I go through the stuff in my home office, the more I find things I cannot explain why I keep them. Take the UPS Box in the image, it is full of small trinkets. And no, there aren’t ten trinkets in there, there are about 100 of them. Trinkets I thought I would use later or trinkets I said I might need later. Both statements which are false because not once during the seven years I’ve been living in this house have I ever used any of the trinkets found inside that box. Yet, I kept them, like a loyal dog to his master I kept the trinkets inside that box.

As I write this entry and as I look around my office, I can see there will be more instances like this one. Where I will find a box or bag filled with trinkets I keep because I may want to use them or I may need them later. It amazes me how much “stuff” and sometimes how much useless stuff I accumulate without truly noticing.

It is true we are creatures of habit, and some of those habits ain’t good at all. But I have arrived at the 10 day mark of the 30-Day Minimalism Game and I’m feeling optimistic. My mantra during this month, after all, is “less is now.” The content in the UPS Box will be gone, the box not so much because I have the feeling I’m going to need it to fill it up with more useless crap. The Gods better help this queen! #carlosmanuelspeaksthetruth
